What is Wild and Green Tourism?
This Glasu project offers grants to support green tourism projects and enterprises in Powys which focus on innovative ways to:
- Enhance biodiversity and promote wildlife;
- Address the causes and consequences of climate change.
The project offers financial support for tourism enterprises and projects in Powys; the types of businesses eligible for grants include:
- Accommodation providers, venues and other enterprises, aspiring to be green and cater for green tourists.
- e.g. Bed and Breakfast providers using renewable energy, reducing waste, using organic food, etc.
- Businesses and projects improving access to wildlife for tourists.
- e.g. Habitat creation holidays, wildlife watching enterprise, etc.
- Projects employing tourist routes, trails, itineraries or packages (by foot, cycle, horse, boat, bus, train, etc) linking green accommodation, wildlife sites and other green venues.
- e.g. renewable energy sites, organic farms, wildlife trails, etc
What’s on offer
- Funding may be available to support individual businesses, where the product or service is particulalry innovative and does not compete directly with similar businesses.
- In general, funding is available to support groups of individual businesses.
- Funding and coordination is also available for businesses to participate in wider regional green tourism initiatives.
- Funding can cover both revenue and capital/infrastructural costs.
Particular types of activities eligible for funding could include any, or all of the following:
- Research for assessing the feasibility of new, green tourism ideas;
- Development of eco-tourism products;
- Publicity, promotion and marketing of sustainable tourism;
- Collaboration - enabling procurement cost-savings or joint marketing.

Green Destinations — Support for local areas to become wildlife or eco destinations
Funding criteria
- Wild and Green Tourism can fund up to 74% of the total costs of a project.
- Therefore, successful applicants will need to contribute/match-fund a proportion of total project costs. The actual levels of match-funding contributions will be determined on an individual basis, but will typically be of the order of 26%.
- Match funding contributions, may be as cash or as an in-kind contribution of beneficiaries’ other resources (e.g. volunteers time).
- However, the total project costs must be fully supported by
recognised evidence (receipts. timesheets, etc).
