Powys Peat Project
Initial Meeting
Background
Over the past couple months, Glasu has been approached by a number
of organisations and individuals who are either interested in
peatland conservation or are currently carrying out restoration on
peat habitats. These projects could have extremely
significant impacts upon biodiversity and climate change as well as
the creation of a carbon-based micro-business. Part of
Glasu’s remit is to support such ventures, and therefore we are
looking at the economic aspects of peatbog restoration and
conservation with relation to a carbon credit or other type of
scheme which can place a value on such work.
Objective
To establish an informal network of all those working on or wishing
to carry out monitoring of peatland restoration which will enable
the sharing of information about monitoring techniques and ideas,
and to look at the potential of feeding into a carbon credit
scheme.
The first meeting was held on 31st March 2009 and was well attended with a video link allowing Natural England’s project manager of The Peat Project to take part from Exeter. Other key participants included the RSPB, BBNPA, and the Wildlife Trust Wales.
Further information from the first meeting is available on the reports page, and additional meetings and a site visit have been arranged. Should you wish to become involved or want notes from subsequent meetings please do contact us.
