COUNTRY STORE : Alternative Building Materials

Man Laying a FloorCurrently the building industry is one of the main contributors to land fill. With this in mind the Alternative Building Products project is looking at researching, developing and bringing to market less environmentally damaging construction materials.

The project will research the whole process from development to manufacturing to marketing. The project will be focusing on two products namely Glaster (www.glaster.co.uk) and Limecrete Flooring (www.limecrete.co.uk).

Glaster
Glaster is a plaster and/or render that has been developed using recycled container glass as the aggregate instead of sand. It has been tested by the BRE (Building Research Establishment) and is currently available to buy.

Limecrete
Limecrete Flooring is a completely lime based flooring, with good insulating values and less embodied energy than cement floors. It can be used in most situations and complies with Part L of the building regulations.

Project Objectives

  • Market research into existing and future markets,
  • Carrying out product testing and development on products such as Limecrete flooring and recycled glass plasters and mortars,
  • Technical assistance from relevant experts such as the Building Research Establishment,
  • To produce literature and publicity materials for awareness raising about the products,
  • To organise open days so that interested individuals can learn and see the products in situ,
  • To organise training events in the production and application of the products.
